Ducor
Palace Hotel
The Hotel Ducor
once housed a five-star hotel. It now is home to approximately
2000 squatters, who live in the looted, filthy building, one
of Monrovia’s all-too-common reminders of war and devastation.
Hotel Ducor has no electricity, latrines, or running water.
Eric Thibodeau visited the hotel and met a resident who was
teaching some of the children in his spare time. Deciding
that the conditions for school were unacceptable, Thibodeau
set out to improve them.
Mercy Ships crew joined Thibodeau to clean
up the school area. They built benches and painted blackboards.
Over the past few months, attendance has gone from a few dozen
children attending sporadically to over one hundred students
attending full time, with seven teachers now working to give
these kids a chance at education. The school has been christened
the “Mercy School,” and parents and students alike express
thanks for what God has done through the Mercy Ships crew.
