Orphanage
Like many of the orphanages Mercy Ships
became connected with during the Liberia field service, the
staff at Christian Orphanage were doing the best they could
to care for their 45 children, ranging in age from 2-16, with
the little they had. Due to inadequate provision, the Liberian
government was preparing to shut down the orphanage. The Elliott
family along with Cliff Jones, Mel and Sue Somersall, and
Mark Arulia wanted to help rebuild the orphanage, which had
no dormitories, while also providing the kids with marketable
skills.
With the help of supporters, Mercy Ships
crew were able build a boy’s dormitory, and the girl’s dormitory
was also rebuilt. Red Cross donated a well. The older boys
were enrolled in a VO-TECH school run by Living Waters Ministry,
and some of the girls learned to sew, with sewing machines
donated to the orphanage. Additionally, bunk beds were built,
food has been donated, and land has been secured. A ten-room
school is under construction, and agriculture development
has been taught. All of this occurred while relationships
with the kids grew, showing them a God who provides, not just
physically but for the whole child.
